Henri Matisse

Matisse is a French artists who was part of the modernist movement.  Matisse was well known for his original and fluid style and use of colour.  In 1901 Matisse painted ‘La Raie Verte’ with oil on canvas. This is considered a piece of modern art as Matisse uses abstraction to show his intentions with the painting. This allows the audience to observe the piece carefully to understand Matisse’s intentions. Matisse’s use of brush strokes is rough and noticable, his use of colour is also bright and vivid. Matisse ttechniques were simplistic, these qualities are why Matisse is considered a modernist.
